SAMBA has been a project with the commission to identify and describe a common main process in healthcare, with defined concepts. This work has lead to a common general basic model for healthcare.

There is a need for a common model as the basis for the continued work with development of standards in healthcare. Standards are necessary to promote the quality work with systematic comparisons, for more adequate initiative to increase the competence of the employees, and - last but not least - as the basis to develop well functioning IT support in healthcare with systems able to communicate with each other.

Six counties and autonomic regions have participated in the project together with the Swedish Healthcare Communications Network (Carelink), Örebro University, and the Swedish Federation for Medical Informatics. The project has been carried out with funding from the participating organisations and the governmental funding programme for IT in healthcare (the ITHS 2 programme).

The project started in August 2001. The work has yielded a process tool which has been used to describe the work flow of healthcare for one individual subject of care. This work flow is described as three parallel process. The project was finished August 23, 2003.

In the work there has been continuous information sharing with the Swedish National Board for Health and Welfare to support its work with a national programme for IT support in the development of healthcare (bill no 149, the Swedish Parliament 1999/2000). There has also been a cooperation with the National Board of County Councils and the project in Carelink to develop IT platforms in Sweden. The project has reported continuously to the European Committee for Standardisation, Technical Committe 251, in its work with the revision of prEN 12967 Health Informatics - Service Architecture (HISA), and prEN 13940 Health Informatics - System of Concepts to Support Continuity of Care (CONTsys).

Delivery of the report: to Carelink 27 August, 2003, to ITHS the same day, and to the Swedish Standards Institute, Working Group II (terminology) of the Technical committee 334 (Health Informatics, mirror group of CEN TC 251 WG II) September 9, 2003.
